He grew up on the family farm. Later he worked at the Farmer's Store in New Auburn, Wisconsin. He found out that a small store was for sale across the street on the corner of the next block west from the Farmer's Store at 151East Main Street. After purchasing the store he renamed it Harry's Store. On his first day in business he was so short of cash that he had to borrow money for the change in his cash register. His wife Orpha and later the children helped in the store. He ran the store until his retirement in 1974. He sold it to Hugh "Snook" Reed and then renamed it to Snook's Store. Snook retired in 1988 and died in June of 2003.
His favorite hobby was fishing which he indulged in frequently. Many times when relatives came to visit they would go off fishing to one of the many lakes in the area.
