Note 356. Obituary Lincoln Sentinel, Sept. 2, 1915
Rachel Harlow
Rachel Wardman was born in Barrington , Cook county, Ill. , Dec. 12, 1846.
On Dec. [can’t read], 1868, she was united in marriage to W.H. Harlow. In Feb. [can’t read] they started for Kansas and reached Lincoln county and settled on the farm March 1st of the same spring, where they have lived continuously during this time. They were among the first settlers and they endured many of the hardships to which the early settlers were subjected. Laboring together they have built themselves a home where they lived contented and happy lives. God blessed them with six boys but he recalled one in infancy and Frank, a young man of 17.
Mrs. Harlow was successful in raising four splendid boys who rise up to call her blessed.
Mrs. Harlow leaves to mourn her loss a loving husband, four sons, also two sisters and one brother.
While yet a young woman, Mrs. Harlow gave her life to Christ and became a member of the Baptist church and remained a member of this faith until a few years ago when she and her husband placed their letters with Pottersburg church. Her life and influence has been a benediction to this community. Her great principal was right and truth first in all things.
She has been a leader in Christian work and her influence will live on to eternity.
Since Feb. 1 she has been confined to her bed and bore intense suffering with patience and always had a pleasant greeting for everyone who came.
Sunday morning Aug. 29, 1915, she passed to her reward, at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 17 days.
Funeral services were conducted at the Pottersburg church, Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock and were in charge of Rev. Wallace of Vesper, Kan., and Rev. W.H. Zook, her pastor.
The remains were laid to rest in the Pottersburg cemetery.

Note 357. Obituary. Lincoln Sentinel-Republican, July 5, 1928
William Henry Harlow
William Henry Harlow was born near Malone , N.Y. , Jan. 7, 1841. At the age of 12 years he removed with his parents to Illinois , settling near Elgin , where he grew to manhood. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted, becoming a soldier in Company I, 52nd Illinois Infantry, serving for three years and nine months. He was with the forces under the command of General Sherman, and participated with his regiment, in Sherman ’s march to the Sea. At the close of the war he returned to Illinois and engaged in farming.
Dec. 24, 1868, he was united in marriage to Rachel Wortman. This union was blessed in the birth of six sons, three of whom preceded him to the great beyond: Orson Truman, Frank Wesley and one dying in infancy.
He came with his family to Kansas in 1876. He purchased homestead rights on the farm in Grant township, where he resided at the time of his death, settling on the same, March 2, 1876. His residence on this farm had been continuous except for 1½ years which, together with his family, he spent in Miami county, Kan.
He became a Christian, and united with the Baptist church, during the years of his boyhood, his wife being identified with the same church. Both were loyal to the church of their early life, and remained so until sometime after the building of the Pottersburg M.E. Church, which was erected in 1910, when they became members of that church. Later he transferred his membership to the Methodist Church at Lincoln , and on April 8, 1923, he became, by transfer, a member of the Ash Grove Methodist Protestant church.

Orson T. Harlow
Orson T. Harlow was born March 2, 1870, at Elgin , Ill. With his parents he moved to Kansas March 2, 1876, and settled near Pottersburg, where his father still resides. At the age of about 16 years he began teaching school in a dugout near his home, teaching for 13 years, a large number of friends here being his former pupils.
Oct. 2, 1898, he was united in marriage with Miss May Weians, moving at once to the farm where he resided until his death. Mr. Harlow took suddenly ill March 9, and died March 16.
This community was shocked by his sudden death. Just a week before he became sick on his way home from Ash Grove. Dr. Sutton of Lincoln and Dr. Shelksohn of Sylvan Grove were called and decided it was appendicitis. Mr. Harlow was taken to the Lincoln sanitarium on Monday evening and was operated upon Tuesday afternoon. He seemed to be getting better when complications set in, causing his death Saturday.
Besides his loving wife he leaves to mourn him his father, W.H. Harlow, and two brothers, Elbert and Ernest of Pottersburg, and another brother, O.W. Harlow of Lucas , Kan. , and a host of loving friends. Mr. Harlow was one of our prosperous and highly respected farmers. He had been an active officer of the Yorktown Telephone Co. and was one of the Ash Grove Townsite company officers. It was his wish that his wife hold his townsite stock and do all in her power to make Ash Grove a good town.
The funeral was conducted at the home Monday, Rev. Knox officiating. Interment was in Spillman Cemetery . Ninety-one autos were in the procession and many said it was the largest funeral held in this vicinity.

In 1948, Mrs. Harlow underwent surgery in Ellsworth hospital and in 1949 she was afflicted with an ailment of which she never recovered. In her last ailment, she was tenderly cared for by a niece, Mrs. Sara McAlavey of Lincoln . [From the Lincoln Sentinel-Republican, May 3, 1951: Mrs. Harlow had been confined to her home for the greater part of the last two years. The nature of her illness was such that it was difficult for her to get around and during much of the time she was confined to a wheelchair. However, she was able to do a part of her house work until the past couple of months, when she was forced to go to bed.
Mr. Harlow, who has been a faithful servant of the county for many years, fell in the home several weeks ago and broke his leg. At present he is in Asbury hospital where his many friends are [can’t read] opportunity to visit him.]

Ernest David Harlow
Ernest David Harlow, youngest son of William and Rachel Harlow, was born in Miami county, Kan. , Dec. 24, 1884, and departed this life May 12, 1951, at Asbury hospital in Salina at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 18 days. Father, mother and five brothers preceded him in death.
On Jan. 10, 1929, he was united in marriage to May Harlow of Lincoln , Kan. Mrs. Harlow preceded him in death by 16 days on April 26, 1951.
In the fall of 198 Mr. Harlow and his father left the home there at Pottersburg and moved to Lincoln where Mr. Harlow took the office of Clerk of the District Court of Lincoln county in January 1919. He held this office for 32 consecutive years until his death. He loved his work at the courthouse and all the people with whom he worked.
Mr. Harlow was a member of the Lincoln Methodist church and attended services there as long as it was possible.
When a small boy Ernest received an injury which caused him to be a cripple the remainder of his life. As he grew older it became harder for him to get around to his work but he was determined never to give up. During his recent hospitalization and Mrs. Harlow’s illness and death, his load became quite heavy and when more complications arose the load become too great for him to overcome.
His life and influence has been a benediction to the community. His great principle was “right and truth first in all things.” It has been said of him he was a man with a “million collar personality.” He possessed the happiest disposition, always looking on the bright side, always willing and ready to lend a helping hand to someone in need.
Mr. Harlow was a devoted husband, loved by all his relatives and friends and a good neighbor.
He leaves to mourn his passing no immediate family but many relatives and a host of friends.
[Buried in Spillman Cemetery .]

MOREY JORDON LAZENBY Aged 5, Died Dec. 9, 1898. Wayne, NY
"Sad was the news that came flashing over the wires last Friday afternoon, announcing the death of the only child of Mr. & Mrs. Herbert LAZENBY, from Rochester. Mrs. LAZENBY, after having thoroughly consulted their home physicians and specialists, went with her little son to the above place on Monday, Dec. 5th, to have an operation performed. On Thurs., the 8th, the operation was successfully performed by three specialists, at the home of Dr. Collier, a relative of Mrs. LAZENBY. All seemed hopeful until a few moments before 4:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, when, without any alarming symptoms, he quietly fell asleep in death. This sad intelligence was immediatedly communicated to the husband at home, who joined his wife at Rochester, accompanied by his brother William, of Dundee, returning with the remains on the afternoon train, to their home Saturday.
The funeral was held at their residence Monday, Dec. 12th, at 11:30 o'clock am, their paster officiating. The church to which they belong, and the friends and neighbors were in large attendance, feeling keenly the sorrow in the home.
Morey Jordon LAZENBY was aged 5 years and 12 days, his birthday occurring November 27th. He was early afflicted with that which gave his parents much anxiety, leading them to seek competent specialists that he might enter manhood with a sound body. Their dreams and fondest hopes were in a large degree pending this trip, long anticipated, upon which fond affection would sacrifice anything. That these ambitions might be realized, but little did they look for hope's star to be so quickly darkened. Little Morey was a beautiful child possessing a charming face and expression. Extremely affectionate, with most winsome features that endeared him to all. He had entwined himself into others' lives as to be the dearest treasure of his fond parents and grandfather and others as to almost break all earthly pleasures. He was very fond of his grandparents, who will miss him as much as anyone. It is with the sincerest sorrow we sympathize with our Brother and Sister LAZENBY and the aged grandfather in this severe affliction.
Grieve not with hopeless sorrow,
Jesus has felt your pain;
He did thy lamb but borrow,
He'll give him back again. L.C.E."
