EVERY SATURDAY, Elgin, Ill, April 30, 1887, page 8, col 4.
Mrs. Hulda Wortman died Wednesday morning at her home in this city, of consumption. Deceased was 66 years of age and had been very low for some time. She was born in Putnam county, New York, and was a widow. Several children survive. Mrs. G. W. Lessender and Mrs. Harlow, both of Kansas, and Mrs. Robert Wollcott, of this city, are her daughters. The funeral occurred Thursday afternoon and the remains were interred at Barrington Center.

Note 81   Halsey Wortman

Born May 19, 1816 to William and Anna Swarthout Wortman of Barrington, Yates County, New York. He was the eighth of twelve children. He married Hulda Robinson the daughter of Carle Robinson and Rachel Winters.
On the 1840 Barrington, Yates County, New York census he has a farm next to his father and brother.
In the early 1840's a large number of people moved from the Barrington area to Barrington Cook County, Illinois. this included Halsey and his brother William along with their families, Hulda's parents and some of her brothers and sisters.
In May of 1844 he purchased 40 acres of government land in Section 27 for $50.00 and 80 acres in Section 34 for $100.00. These both were in Barrington County, Illinois. Later in 1846 he purchased the south half of lot One in Section 6 for containing 40 acres for $50.00. I have copies of the land records.
From the birth dates of his children, he came to Illinois in 1844 and purchased the land. Rachel, his daughter, was born in Dec. 1846 in New York so he had to have gone back to New York some time in 1846. His next child, Emiline, was born in May of 1848 in Barrington, Illinois. He probably then brought his family to Illinois in 1847. Many of his children stayed in the Elgin and Barrington area.
Halsey died January 21, 1863 and is buried in the Barrington Center Cemetery, Barrington Cook County, Illinois.
There is some confusion in the New York and Illinois records with the names Waterman and Wortman. In the 1850 Illinois Census record Halsey and his brother William's name is listed as Waterman. His father and mother in New York on the 1840 Census are listed as Waterman. The cause of this confusion is that his parents William and Anna Wortman lived close to a family by the name of William and Anna Waterman.

Note 91 Vital Records Extracted from the Yates County Chronicle Editor: Stafford C. Cleveland January - April 1872

11 January 1872  Died Mr. Henry Armstrong, a well known farmer of Milo, died yesterday morning. His father John Armstrong, an early resident of the town, survives him. (below said he was born in 1824)

21 August 1873 Died at her home in Milo on Monday, August 18, 1873, Mrs. Sarah Armstrong, wife of John Armstrong, at the age of seventy-four years. [She] was a daughter of Rowland Embree, one of the pioneers of what is now Torrey, having settled there in 1806. She was born at Stillwater, N.Y. in 1799 and married in 1822. Her married life has, therefore, extended over more than half a century, and during that time their home has been on the same premises, the east part of lot twelve, of township seven in the first range. The land was purchased in 1793 by James Armstrong the father of John Armstrong, but remained unimproved until the son married and settled thereon. They were people of well-ordered lives, and have been blessed with two children, both of whom have died leaving descendants. Their daughter Mary A., born in 1823, was the wife of the late James Lawrence, and died in 1858, leaving three daughters. Their son Henry Armstrong, born in 1824, was twice married and died January 10, 1872, leaving three sons and a daughter….

JOHN WRIGHT.

In 1812, John Wright and Joseph Sunderlin, his brother-in-law, came from Putnam county to Barrington. They bought a wagon in partnership, and each owning one horse put the two together, and brought their possessions to the new country. Both had been to view it the year before, on foot. John Wright married Lydia Sunderlin of the family just mentioned, and from the most humble beginning acquired a large estate by industry and good management of his affairs.

He died at the age of seventy in 1858. His children were Maria, Martha, Lydia, Erasmus and Alzada.

Maria married first, James Swarthout, and after his decease Joseph Merritt. Some of her children reside in Barrington. Martha married Samuel Bailey, and lives in Barrington. She has two children. Lydia married Joel Wixson, and lives in Wayne. Alzada married Baxter Kinne, and lives near New York.

Erasmus Wright married Sally, the daughter of William Wortman. They have had ten children, of whom but four are living. The oldest, a daughter, married Henry Armstrong, and resides at the Crystal Spring. Erasmus owns the homestead of his father, (500 acres,) and one-half the Crystal Spring property, and has lost none of the hereditary qualities by which it was acquired.

Note 122
William Wortman jr of New York, Illinois and Michigan is one of the more interesting people in our family tree. He was the 10 th of 12 children of William and Anna Swarthout Wortman of Barrington, Yates County, New York. He was about 1820 died sometime after 1880.
The part of Barrington he was raised in borders on the town of Wayne in Steuben county and Tyrone in Schuyler county. In fact you need to look at records in all three counties. It is not uncommon to be born in one township live in two different ones and be buried in the third.
He probably married Lucinda. She died at the age of 19 years, 9 months and 15 days on May 1, 1844 and a few days later their daughter Mary Ann died on May 9th at the age of seven months. They are both buried in the Jordan Cemetery in Tyrone, Schuyler County, New York, just over the border from Barrington. Lucinda is listed as wife of William Wortman Jr in cemetery records. Cleveland in his HISTORY AND DIRECTORY OF YATES COUNTY said he married a Jane Jordan of Tyrone. She died and he went to Barrington, Cook County, Illinois. No other evidence of this marriage has been found. It is not certain if he married in New York again. As with many county histories they sometimes are not completely accurate.
His brother Halsey and his wife Hulda left for Barrington, Illinois probably in 1847, (last child born in NY was Dec 1846 and first child born in Ill was May 1848) and William went with them.
There is an odd note in one of the Chicago newspapers that there was a petition for divorce filed in the Cook County Court House on September 16, 1847 between William and Mary Wortman. At the present time it is not certain if this is my William.
William did marry a Phebe Robinson (born 1831 in New York and died 1906 in LaSalle county, IL) the daughter of Carle and Rachel Winters Robinson. They were married at Elgin, Illinois on November 24, 1847. She was a sister of Halsey's wife Hulda.. Though listed as a farmer in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census he id work for the township. In 1853 & 1869 he was a Collector and in 1861 a Commissioner for Highways for Barrington. Their three children were born here; Amos in 1849, Albert in 1855 and George in 1862.
Sometime after 1870 the family moved to Ionia county, Michigan . He had a brother David Wortman and a sister Lavinia Swarthout livingm there along with some cousins. By 1872 he was running the Palos House, in Palos, Ionia County with one of his sons. Their ad was placed in the HISTORY AND DIRECTORY OF IONA COUNTY printed in 1872. There is a Daniel W. and an Andrew Wortman listed in the directory, both probably related. Daniel is the son of David Wortman and Andrew could be a cousin but his relationship is uncertain. His brother-in-law, Charles Swarthout is also listed in Ronald, Ionia County.
Ionia County divorce records list that in 1877 a William and Phebe Wortman were divorced. Phebe. by the 1880 census she and all of her children move to Sheridan, LaSalle Co., IL. Phebe and George to live with a sister Elizabeth and her husband, Delos Robinson. In the 1900 census she is still in Sheridan and lists herself as a widow. Their son Amos had married in Kane County in 1871 Illinois to Emily Harlow their first two children were born in Michigan Della in July 1872 and Cora in August 1873, but the third child Elizabeth was born Nov.1874 in Illinois
Albert is also in Sheridan and married to Louisa Bennett about 1874 according to the 1900 census. She was born in Montcalm County, Michigan. Though in 1870 she and her mother were living in Ionia County. Their first child, Estelle, was born in October 1878 in Illinois. In 1900 Albert and family had moved back to Belding in Ionia County, MI
William seems to have stayed in Ronald after the rest of the family left for Illinois. The 1880 census lists him as a grocer and married to Helen (born Oct. 1816). In 1900 she was still living in Palo, Ionia Co., Michigan and listed as a widow. There is no grave stones for either Helen or William listed in Ionia County.
