He married Mary L., married about 1901, born 22-Feb-1881, died 25-Dec-1967 in Urbana, Steuben County, New York, buried in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee, Yates Co., NY.

In the 1880 census of Wayne, Steuben County, New York, There is a William Wortman age 50 married to a Mary E. age 39. The have a daughter Anna P. aged 5 years. Perhaps this is correct William but not sure as he listed his father's birth place as New Jersey. In the 1891 Directory of Wayne there is a Mrs. Wortman listed as a widow. Almost fits all the facts.

He married Mary E., born about 1841. In 1890 she married E.H. Thompson.

He was a soldier in the 126th New York Volunteers, and became a captain. After the Civil War he moved to Michigan and was a merchant. Family listed in 1880 census at Pewamo, Ionia County, Michigan. Occupation is farmer.

He married Ann Elizabeth Chubb, married about 1851, born __-Jul-1832 in New York, buried __-___-1910 in Pewamo Cemetery, Lyons, Ionia Co., MI . Ann: Living in Pewamo, Lyons, Ionia Co., MI in 1900, daughter Emma living with her also same place in 1910 but daughter listed as widow and last name is Evans.

Sherwood, (Charlotte2 Wortman, William 1) born 1839-1846 in New York), died in Michigan, military 1861-1862 Civil War 86th New York Infantry Co I, buried in Elm Hall Summer township, Gratiot Co., MI. He served in the 86th New York Infantry for part of the Civil War. He is listed on page 48 in the book Yates County's Boys in Blue by Robert H. Graham. "JOEL H. SHERWOOD enlisted in Co. I at Barrington Oct. 1, aged 22 years. Joined for duty and enrolled as 3d Sergeant at Elmira Oct. 9. Discharged for disability Sept. 15, 1862, at Washington, D. C.

He is still listed as being in Barrington,Yates Co. NY on the 1865 CENSUS YATES COUNTY NY TOWN OF BARRINGTON

In the1870 census living with the family of Rodney Elmer as a farm hand. Rolland Township, Isabella County, Michigan. He is not listed as her husband and she still has her maiden name. This is a bit confusing. though they were married in 1867.
Two marriage listings for Joel Sherwood in Ionia Co Michigan perhaps had a second wife
Possible he had two wives. see 1880 census listing for Evergreen, Montcalm, Michigan
He is buried in Elm Hill Cemetery Summer, Gatriot County, Michigan in a grave with out a birth or death date on it.

He married (1) 21-Aug-1867 in Ionia County, Michigan, Anice E. "Annie" Elmer #3284, born 1850, (daughter of Rodney Elmer and Mary Ann Walker).

He is not listed in the 1880 census. A Chauncey Wortman is listed as a brother of Kate Wortman in her obituary. Perhaps enumerated twice once in Yates county and then again in Ontario Co. Problem is the age difference or is he just a step brother the son of John & Anna Wortman below

In 1880 census the family is living in Barrington, Yates County, New York and her nephew Ezra Wortman is living with them. 1900 census in Barrington and stated they had 3 children and all still living. children Enna and Emily sound suspiciously similar but 3 years age difference.

He came to Barrington, Cook County, Illinois as a young boy. His parents came west from Barrington, Yates County, New York in 1846 or 1847.

     We don't know how Charlotte Loomis and Alonzo met. Perhaps they met through one of the other Loomis family scattered throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Most Loomis families are related in some way. Anyway he met her and they were married on October 21, 1875 by Rev. G.H. Hubbard. The ceremony took place at the home of her foster father, Benjamin Remington, in Wheatland, Kenosha County. He took her back to Barrington, Illinois.
     In 1880, they moved to Spring Prairie, Walworth County, Wisconsin. They purchased a farm on what is now State Highway 11, just a mile or so west of the Racine County line. They eventually had two tracts of land near each other that totaled 280 acres. The Wortman School was located in on the north east corner of their 160 acre section of land at State Highway 11 and Lyons road.
     In 1924, Charlotte died and Alonzo moved to Delavan, Wisconsin. He lived with his daughter, Irma, until he died.

Obituary 24-Apr-1925 in Burlington papers. CHARLOTTE: After her parents died she lived with the Remingtons in Wheatland, Kenosha Co. She attended Oshkosh Normal School and later taught school. She was a member of the Baptist church. She died at her home in Spring Prairie. Her parents were among the earliest settlers in the Burlington area coming in October of 1835.
