Kaae/Coe Family History

3.

Generation Four

11. Jens Jensen Kaae , (Jens 3 Hansen, Hans 2 Jorgensen, Jorgen 1 Jensen) born 27-Jul-1857 in Östofte Parish, Maribo Co., Denmark, [cxxvii] baptized 6-Sep-1857 in Östofte Parish, Maribo Co., Denmark, [cxxviii] died 3-Feb-1938 in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin, [cxxix] buried 7-Feb-1938 in Mound Cemetery, Racine, Wisconsin, obituary 04-Feb-1938 in Racine Journal Times, Racine, Wisconsin, [cxxx] immigrated 22-Apr-1880 to Port of New York, (see note 4). He was confirmed in Östofte Parish, Maribo County, Denmark on October 1, 1871. This was in the same confirmation class that his future brother-in-law, Nicholas Paulsen, was in.
It is not certain when or where the family took on the surname "Kaae." Many people in Denmark had the same names. There were only seven or eight different names used by most of the population. This could and did cause identification problems especially in the larger villages, towns and parishes. To combat this problem some people and families took on different surnames. They generally added another name after their last name. Some of the added last names that appear in Jen's parish were Kolle, Moller, Due, Flisem and Kaae. The first use of the name "Kaae," that I have found so far was in 1844.
Jen's grandfather, Hans Jorgensen, was listed on his daughter's birth record as Hans Jorgensen Kaae and the daughter was listed as Kirsten Kaae. The Kaae surname was used occasionally after that. Jens does not seem to have used Kaae until after he came to the US in 1880.
Both he and Ida left Hamburg on the SS HERDER and arrived in New York City on April 22, 1880. They then came to Racine, Wisconsin on April 27, 1880 where they were married. By the time of the 1880 Census in June they were living on Racine Street. This was in the 6th ward p. 480 #147-148. His name was spelled "Yans Yansen" here. Shortly after this he must have taken on the surname "Kaae." Anyway, by June 22, 1881 he was using "Jens Jensen Kaae" as as his name when he sold some property. Through out his life he bought and sold many pieces of property in the city of Racine. He also filed his "First Papers" in Racine County on March 24, 1886. This was the first step in the process of becoming a citizen of the United States.
In the 1900 Census the family was living at 1028 9th Street in Racine. This was in the 42nd Ed. sheet 10, line 72. Then in the 1905 State Census and the 1910 Federal Census they were living on Asylum Avenue (now Taylor Avenue) in Mt. Pleasant. According to his wife's obituary they lived in the city part of the time and had their "country home" on Asylum Avenue.
In the 1920 census listed as living with his son in Mt. Pleasant.
Jens was a blacksmith by trade and had been employed by the American Skein and Foundry Company for many years. He was also a member of the Masonic and the Dania societies. He died at his home after a long illness.

He married 27-Apr-1880 in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin, [cxxxi] Ida Sophia Poulsen , born 27-Apr-1860 in Bandholm, Maribo Co., Lolland, Denmark, [cxxxii] (daughter of Paul Jensen and Johanna Sophia Jensen ) baptized 22-Jul-1860 in Östofte Parish, Maribo Co., Denmark, [cxxxiii] died 9-Mar-1914 in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin, [cxxxiv] buried 14-Mar-1914 in Mound Cemetery, Racine, Wisconsin, obituary 10-Mar-1914 in Racine Journal-News, [cxxxv]   immigrated 22-Apr-1880 to Port of New York. Ida : She was a member of Victoria Lodge #5. It was said that she was a woman of loveable disposition and had a wide circle of friends. She died at their home at 1016 9th Street in Racine, Wisconsin. She was confirmed in Östofte Parish on 19 April 1874.
